JAMMU, July 26: Doctors at Fortis Hospital Mohali have successfully treated several complex cancer cases using advanced techniques like immunotherapy, oral targeted therapy, and robot-aided surgery, bringing new hope to patients facing life-threatening conditions.
In one remarkable case, a 53-year-old woman suffering from stage 4 cervical cancer that had spread to her neck vertebrae was at high risk of paralysis.
Under the care of Dr Ketan Dang, senior consultant, medical oncology, she received immunotherapy along with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
The treatment helped her immune system destroy cancer cells, and four years later, she is living a normal life.
In another case, a 32-year-old woman diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer was treated using oral targeted therapy after chemotherapy and surgery.
This method uses specialized drugs to attack cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. The patient responded well and is now in recovery.
A third case involved a 73-year-old man who had a non-healing wound on his tonsil that turned out to be stage IV cancer.
Dr Kuldeep Thakur, Consultant, Head and Neck Onco-surgery, performed robot-assisted surgery using the Da Vinci Xi system. The tumour was completely removed through a 3.5-hour procedure that resulted in minimal blood loss. The patient was discharged just three days after surgery and is now undergoing radiation therapy.
Robot-assisted surgery allows for highly precise, minimally invasive procedures, offering faster recovery, less pain, and better outcomes.
According to Dr Thakur, this technology is especially useful in treating cancers in hard-to-reach areas.
“The oncology team at Fortis Mohali continues to pioneer cancer care with a patient-centric approach, blending modern techniques with experienced medical judgment to offer the best possible outcomes,” Dr Thakur said.
