RAJOURI, Nov 16: Residents of Sawari village in Kotranka Sub Division of Rajouri district have raised serious concern as a large number of domestic animals have been affected by `Foot and Mouth’ Disease (FMD).
With the onset of severe cold, the spread of this highly contagious viral infection is putting livestock at grave risk, directly impacting the livelihood of local families who depend heavily on animal rearing.
Villagers have appealed to the District administration Rajouri and the Animal Husbandry Department to immediately deploy a Veterinary team to the affected area. They have demanded urgent medical intervention, supply of necessary medicines, and preventive measures to control further spread of the disease.
Local residents, Ali Mohammad and Bashir Ahmed explained that Foot & Mouth disease is a serious illness, primarily affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. The disease leads to painful fluid-filled ulcers in the mouth, tongue, lips, gums, and hooves. Animals suffer from high fever, excessive salivation, loss of appetite, weight loss, and a sharp decline in milk production. In severe cases, especially among young animals, sudden death due to cardiac arrest can occur.
Responding to the situation, ADC Kotranka, Dil Mir, confirmed that the Chief Animal Husbandry Officer has been informed about the outbreak. He further assured that a team of Veterinary doctors will visit Sawari tomorrow to assess the situation, provide treatment, and initiate containment measures.
The local community hopes that timely intervention will help prevent further loss and safeguard the health of their livestock.
