SRINAGAR, Aug 14: Flash floods triggered by heavy rains struck parts of north, south, and central Kashmir today, leaving students stranded, damaging roads, and causing panic among residents.

In north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, a sudden flash flood hit the Kudara area of tehsil Bandipora, leaving a group of students stranded in a school. Rescue teams of the district administration, supported by local volunteers, evacuated all students safely without injuries. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and emergency response teams have been rushed to the area with equipment and machinery.
In south Kashmir, flash floods hit the Frislan and Batkoot areas of Pahalgam, damaging roads and local infrastructure. Officials confirmed that no loss of life was reported.
Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district also witnessed flash floods in Akhal, Preng, Ariguripora, Naranag, and Kangan areas, leading to damage of roads and infrastructure. No human casualties were reported.
Following repeated incidents of flash floods and cloudbursts in Ganderbal, the district administration issued a public advisory urging residents and tourists to remain alert and exercise caution. “People have been advised to avoid riverbanks, streams, flood-prone areas, and unstable slopes, and to refrain from crossing bridges or causeways during heavy rains,” the advisory said.
Parents have been asked to keep children indoors, while livestock owners should move animals to safer ground. Tourists and trekkers have been told to strictly follow local guidelines and keep emergency contacts ready. “Tehsil-level disaster management committees and field officials have been directed to stay on high alert. For emergencies, the public can contact the District Control Room at 0194-2416260, 0194-2416261, or 8493988773,” the advisory said.
Meanwhile, authorities have appealed for calm, urging people to follow advisories and avoid spreading rumours.
