BELAGAVI, May 15: An FIR has been registered by Karnataka Police over a fake social media post that falsely claimed an attack on the in-laws’ residence of Colonel Sofia Qureshi in Belagavi, prompting swift action from the authorities and renewed concerns over misinformation targeting defence personnel.
The post, which appeared on X, was later deleted. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the original post is believed to have originated from outside India, with the primary accused identified as Uddin, a resident of British Columbia, Canada.
In addition to Uddin, two other X users – operating under the handles ‘Khubaani’ and ‘Drummi’ – have also been named in the FIR for retweeting the alleged fake post. Police said efforts are underway to ascertain their identities and location.
Taking note of the incident, Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara said earlier in the day that instructions had been issued to the Superintendent of Police to take action strictly as per law.
As a precautionary measure, two police personnel have been stationed outside the residence of Colonel Qureshi’s in-laws in Belagavi.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, coordinating with cybercrime units and central agencies to trace the origin of the post and pursue legal action under the Information Technology Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. (UNI)
