Fast-Track Court awards 10 yrs RI for rape of minor

JAMMU, Aug 30: The Fast-Track Court Jammu, presided over by Amarjeet Singh Langeh today delivered a decisive verdict in the case relating to the rape of a 6-year-old girl that took place in May 2015.
Sohan Lal alias Sonu, aged 27 at the time of the incident, resident of Shahzadpur, Tehsil Marh, District Jammu, has been convicted under Section 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) arising out of FIR No. 139/2015 registered at Police Station Domana and awarded 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI).
After a thorough examination of eyewitness accounts, medical, forensic, and documentary evidence, the court found Sohan Lal guilty beyond reasonable doubt and remarked upon the particularly heinous and chilling nature of the offence.
Delivering sentence, the court has awarded Sohan Lal 10 years of Rigorous Imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 20,000. In the event of default of payment, the convict shall undergo an additional six months of imprisonment. The period of detention already undergone-eight years, ten months, and ten days-will be set off against the awarded sentence. Any fine paid by the convict shall be disbursed to the victim as compensation.
Additionally, recognizing the irreversible trauma inflicted on the child victim, the court has recommended the grant of Rs 6 lakh compensation under the Jammu & Kashmir Victim Compensation Scheme 2019 to further support the victim’s rehabilitation.
