Farmers hold protest, demand adequate rates of Basmati

VIJAYPUR, Oct 10: Angered over the negligent attitude of the Government, the people in Vijaypur today held massive protest demonstration demanding adequate rates of their Basmati  rice and other crops.
A large number of farmers of Ramgarh, Nandpur and Vijaypur area  assembled at Vijaypur town here under the leadership of former Minister and PCC general secretary Manjit Singh and started protest against the Government. They were raising high pitched slogans in support of their demands.
The protesters were shouting slogans like `Wah Re Modi Tera Kamaal, Murga Sasta Mehangi  Daal’. Agitating farmers alleged that the Government did not give them proper rates  of the crops in comparison to the market rates. “They purchase crops from them on cheap rates and earn huge profit. It leads to losses due to which the condition of farmer goes on deteriorating,” a protester said.
Speaking on the occasion, Manjit Singh said that the Government should give adequate rate of the rice like Basmati and other crops to the farmers and it should not be less than Rs 4000 per quintal. He further demanded compensation of Rs 20 lakhs for those killed in cross border firing of Pak Rangers along the International Border and Rs 10 lakhs for those who got wounded in the border firing.
He said that the Government should also give compensation to those farmers whose fields were silted due to flash floods in Devak and Basanter due to which the fields have become un-cultivatable, Mr Singh said asking the people to maintain  communal harmony as some incidents have happened which have  created disturbance and mistrust.
Later, the protesters handed over a memorandum to the Government though the concerned SDM Vijaypur.
