Family outing turns tragic; one dead, 2 missing

SRINAGAR, July 13: A family outing turned into a tragedy in the Uri area of Baramulla district today after four persons slipped into the canal of the Lower Jhelum Hydroelectric Project (LJHP), leading to the death of a minor, with two others still missing and one person rescued.
The incident occurred near Zehanpora when one member of the group accidentally fell into the fast-flowing canal. In an attempt to rescue him, others jumped in, resulting in a chain of drownings, according to eyewitnesses.

A joint rescue operation was launched by local residents, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
One person was rescued, while the body of a 13-year-old boy, identified as Ibrahim Bin Showkat, son of Showkat Ali Shah of Narkara, Budgam, was recovered near Boniyar.
The rescued has been identified as 31-year-old Syed Mohammad Ilyas Geelani, son of Mufti Abdul Rahim Geelani, a resident of Towheedgunj, Baramulla. He was shifted to PHC Sheeri, where his condition is stated to be stable.
The two persons still missing have been identified as Mehnaz Rasheed Shah, 30, son of Abdul Rasheed Shah from Khanyar, Srinagar, and Ahmad Bin Khalid, 13, son of Khalid Mehraj Shah from Hyderpora, Srinagar.
At the time of filing this report, search operations by the police, SDRF, and local volunteers were continuing. The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over the area, with anxious families waiting for further news.
