Srinagar, Mar 26: Tension gripped Government Medical College Anantnag today after attendants alleged that expired intravenous (IV) glucose was administered to patients in the surgical ward.
According to attendants, the incident surfaced when they checked a glucose bottle being administered and found that its expiry date had lapsed.
They said they immediately alerted hospital staff and questioned the use of expired medical supplies in a government healthcare facility.
The allegation quickly spread across the ward, triggering panic and anger among patients and attendants.
A group of attendants assembled within the hospital premises and staged a protest, demanding a thorough inquiry and strict action against those responsible.
The protest briefly disrupted routine functioning before the situation was brought under control.
Some attendants claimed that more than one expired bottle had been used.
One of the patients, Mushtaq Ahmad from Reasi, who was holding one of the glucose bottles administered to him with an expired date, alleged that “three bottles” were given to him and that similar supplies may have been used for other patients.
Another attendant, Aijaz Ahmad Shah, claimed that the bottles were later removed from the ward by staff.
Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Kulbir Singh said the administration has taken cognisance of the incident and that necessary action will follow.
“We have taken action and ordered suspension of the concerned staff. The matter will be investigated. It appears that among a lot, one expired bottle may have been inadvertently used,” he said.
Hospital authorities have assured that a detailed inquiry will be conducted to ascertain the facts and fix responsibility.
