NEW DELHI, Dec 18:
The Centre today announced a special drive to recruit women as special police volunteers in every village to curb crimes against the women and help for their uplift.
Union Minister for Women & Child Development Maneka Gandhi informed the Lok Sabha that there will be recruitment of special police volunteers in every village of the country from next month in which there will be at least one woman volunteer who should be 21 years old and class 12th pass. Responding to a question during Question Hour, Ms Gandhi informed that the special police volunteers would keep an eye on the crime against women and also on those parents who do not allow their girl children to go to school.
The Minister said ending gender based inequalities and discrimination and violence faced by girls and women in the country was the utmost priority of the Union Government.
She announced that for the safety of women in the country, all the new cellphones will have inbuilt panic buttons for calling help and old phones will also be upgraded by the cell phone providers.
She said the Ministry of Women and Child Development was also implementing schemes of One Stop Centre to provide integrated support and assistance to women affected by violence and scheme for universalisation of women helpline, intended to provide 24-hour immediate and emergency response to the same.
