Evacuate Indian students from Iran: JKSA to PM

Srinagar, Mar 1: The J&K Students Association (JKSA) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene urgently to ensure the safety and evacuation of Indian students in Iran.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, the Association cited a “grave and rapidly deteriorating” security situation after strikes.
JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami said the developments have created panic and uncertainty among foreign nationals, including thousands of Indian students studying across Iranian cities.
A majority of them, he said, are from the Kashmir Valley and are enrolled in MBBS and allied medical programmes.
He said an advisory issued on February 23 had urged Indian nationals to leave Iran in view of rising tensions.
However, he noted, many students have been unable to depart due to ongoing semester examinations and two nationwide medical examinations – the Uloompaya (Comprehensive Basic Science Examination) and the Pre-Internship Examination – scheduled for March 5 under Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education.
The Association said students are facing restricted movement, communication challenges and uncertainty over examination schedules.
It added that the lack of clarity from some institutions has compounded anxiety.
JKSA Iran Coordinator Faizan Nabi called for immediate coordination between the Ministry of External Affairs, the Embassy of India in Tehran, Iranian authorities and university administrations to safeguard students’ interests.
He said contingency plans, including organised evacuation through diplomatic channels and possible transit via neighbouring countries, should be kept ready if the situation worsens.
The Association also flagged concerns of families in Kashmir who are closely monitoring developments and struggling to remain in contact with their children.
Seeking urgent intervention, JKSA said the Centre must take necessary steps to protect the safety and academic future of Indian students in Iran.
