Trump-Putin meet generates anxiety in Ukraine amid possibility of land swap pact

KYIV, Aug 12: Ahead of the upcoming Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska, where the two leaders will discuss a settlement for the Russia-Ukraine war, as well as other issues, uncertainty has gripped Ukraine amid President Donald Trump’s announcement that some of the territory captured by Russia will be kept by Moscow.
This particularly concerns ceding the as-of-yet uncaptured areas of Donbas and Luhansk to Russian control, something which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has outrightly refused to accept.
The US President on Monday discussed the possibility of a “land swap” between the two nations, further undermining Ukrainian President’s position. In a press conference, he said “They’ve (Russia) occupied some very prime territory. We’re going to try and get some of that territory back for Ukraine.”
Zelensky maintained his position of a land swap being out of the question, stating he’d need constitutional approval to do so, something which Trump had mocked stating that he didn’t need the approval while sending thousands of his people to their deaths.
