EU extends sanctions against Iran for alleged human rights violations: Council of EU

MOSCOW, March 31: The European union has extended sanctions against Iran until April 13, 2027, for alleged serious human rights violations, the Council of the EU said.

“The Council today decided to extend EU restrictive measures responding to serious human rights violations in Iran until 13 April 2027   In the context of the sanctions’ review, the Council also decided not to renew the listing of one deceased individual. The list now comprises a total of 262 individuals and 53 entities,” the Council said in a statement on Monday.

These measures include an entry ban and asset freeze, as well as a ban on the export of telecommunications monitoring equipment to Iran, the statement read, adding that EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing funds to individuals and entities included in the sanctions list.

The EU began imposing sanctions against Iran in 2011 and has renewed them annually since then. This time, the reason for the extension of sanctions was alleged human rights violations by Tehran during the suppression of recent unrest.
