UDHAMPUR, June 4: Latti Development Committee (LDC) has demanded setting up of a new Fire & Emergency Station at remote Latti Tehsil headquarters in Udhampur district.
In separate letters flashed to the Chief Secretary of J&K, Director General Fire Services and the Deputy Commissioner Udhampur, Chairman of the Committee and Sarpanch Latti, Kasturi Lal Gupta revealed that in entire remote Latti, Dudu and Basantgarh Sub Divisions, having population over 1.50 lakhs, there is not even a single Fire and Emergency Station established by the Govt so far. He said majority of the houses in this entire belt are wooden.
The Chairman said many fire incidents took place in proper Latti town, Dudu and adjoining areas in the recent past but the properties could not be saved due to non-existence of Fire Station. He said Chenani town is about 56 kms from Latti and Dudu about 78 kms, and it takes over three hours to reach Fire tender from there due to bad condition of road. At Ramnagar also, there is Fire Station but not at Basantgarh town which is about 65 kms from there. This entire belt has been deprived of this most important service.
He said there are about 100 shops, Govt Treasury, two banks, PHC and over a dozen other Govt offices at Latti but in case of emergency, no help can be rendered from Chenani or Ramnagar side. Therefore, Govt must sanction a new Fire Station at Latti town which is central place. This is most genuine and burning demand of the people of this far-flung area, he added.
