JAMMU, Jan 13: Dr Sohit Kanotra, Assistant Professor, Department of ENT, Lousiana State University, New-Orleans, USA successfully operated 40 patients who needed surgery. These patients were examined during two ENT camps, held at Udhampur and Hiranagar, recently.
Dr Sohit was assisted by Dr J Paul, ex-Head of ENT Department, Government Medical College, Jammu.
The first camp was held at the KLSM Rotary Eye and ENT Hospital Udhampur under the aegis of Rotary Club International District 4070 with the active co-operation of Dr S P Sharma, Director of the hospital and Rotarians.
A total of 325 patients were examined and given free advice and medicines. Of these, 19 patients needing surgery were operated. They comprised 11 patients whose hearing was restored and five patients who had life threatening disease in their ears.
The second such camp was conducted by the same team at the Sub-District Hospital Hiranagar under the aegis of Jai Baba Neelkanth Sewa Mandal, Hiranagar with the active co-operation of Ashok Tadia, president of the Mandal and Dr Onkar Bhagat, BMO.
A total of 279 patients were given free advice and medicines. Most of the patients belonged to the Below Poverty Line category and came from the remote border areas.
Twenty one patients were selected for surgery and successfully operated. Ear surgery of 16 patients was performed to restore hearing. They included two children who had congenital cholesteatoma in their ears which could even prove fatal. Five patients with throat cancer were also diagnosed and given advice. Some of the patients could not be operated due to poor general health. They were advised to get the requisite treatment to make them fit for surgery at a later date.
Dr Sohit Kanotra has planned to hold more such camps during his future visits to India.
