SRINAGAR, Oct 16: The Employees’ Joint Action Committee (EJAC) today held a convention in Srinagar under the theme “United for Employees’ Rights,” calling for justice and fulfillment of long-pending demands of daily wage, casual, temporary, and seasonal workers.
Speaking to reporters, EJAC General Secretary Sajjad Ahmad Parray said the convention focused on demands including the renewal and implementation of the Minimum Wage Act. “This is a peaceful convention. Today, we want to inform the government that during election campaigns and in the manifesto, promises were made. Now it is time to fulfill them,” he said.
Parray criticized the delay in action on a committee report announced by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, which was due within six months but has not been released even after seven months. “No report has been made public, and no employee has been consulted. The report is ready. Everything is ready. There is a need to take a decision on this,” he said.
He added, “This is a matter of humanity and a social issue. We do not want to protest. But the government needs to consider this in a social context. How long will we bear this injustice? What crime are we being punished for?”
EJAC President Wajahat Durani said, “We are not in favor of protests, but the government is forcing us to do this. We once again appeal to the Chief Minister that this matter has been pending since 2014.”
Durani said a resolution would be passed on behalf of temporary workers, casual laborers, and seasonal workers if the Government fails to fulfill its promises this time. “We are about to pass a resolution, and it will represent the voices of all affected employees,” he said.
