SRINAGAR, Sept 11: The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh has directed the Union Territory Administration to effectively consider the claim of the Press Club of Kashmir for alternate premises for running its affairs.
The direction has been passed by Justice Javed Iqbal Wani in a petition titled “Press Club of Kashmir” Versus UT of J&K and Others. During the course of hearing, counsel for the petitioner submitted that Press Club of Kashmir being the Registered Society was allotted a building at Polo View, Srinagar for housing its office and running its affairs and in the year 2019 the Government even released an amount of Rs 50 lakh in its favour.
In the year 2021, the official respondents directed the Press Club to vacate the building on the assurance that another suitable alternative building would be provided to it. On this assurance, the building was vacated. However, the respondents thereafter didn’t provide any alternate building despite submitting various representations to the authorities concerned including the Chief Minister.
After hearing counsel for the petitioner, the High Court issued notice to the respondents, returnable within a period of four weeks. In the meantime, the High Court directed the respondents to effectively consider the claim of the Press Club of Kashmir for alternate premises for running its affairs.
