Ecuador plans to commission its first nuclear reactor within 10 years

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 28 : Ecuador is beginning to implement its nuclear program, planning to commission its first reactor within 10 years, the country’s energy ministry announced.

“Ecuador is reaching a turning point in its nuclear energy development: the Nuclear Program Implementation Agency (NEPIU) is being established, a committee that will manage and coordinate the national nuclear program,” the ministry said.

The agency’s creation is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026, as required by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The new organization will allow the country to move from planning to the orderly, safe, and phased implementation of nuclear energy development.

“NEPIU will be an interministerial coordinating body, involving all government agencies, and will be responsible for technical management of the process until the commissioning of Ecuador’s first nuclear reactor, RNE1, in approximately ten years,” the ministry noted.

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa previously said that the country needed nuclear energy projects to overcome its energy capacity shortage.

The Ecuadorian Energy Ministry told Sputnik in April that the country was discussing the construction of the country’s first small-capacity nuclear power plant with Russia and several other countries.
