Srinagar, Apr 12: The Election Commission has issued notice to Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Matoo for distributing smart phones among the Corporators and has been directed to deposit these phones and explain his position.
The Nodal Officer Model Code of Conduct and Additional Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, KK Sidha, today issued show cause notice (No. ADC/LS-Elec/2019/476-79 Dated 12-04-2019) to Matoo for violating Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
The notice was issued to Matoo on the basis of a complaint filed by Showkat Ahmad Mir, Chief Election Agent of National Conference Candidate for Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency. Mir has alleged that Matoo has distributed smart phones to the SMC Corporators in violation of MCC.
The Nodal Officer in his notice has said that it has been established that Matoo has issued smart phones. “Whereas the object of the Model Code is that energy to do good by any person in power should not be used on the eve of elections, so as to derive any benefit during elections, the same has been upheld by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in Gassi Ram versus Dal Singh and others ACSE”, read the notice.
Sidha has directed Matoo to deposit all the smart phones distributed to Corporators of SMC in violation of MCC in his office by this evening. He has also been asked to explain his conduct.
