EC gives nod for use of EVMs

JAMMU, Apr 7: The Election Commission has given nod to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), J&K, Shantmanu for use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in the Municipal elections whenever they are announced by the Government.
Shantmanu told the Excelsior that they have received the nod of the Election Commission for use of EVMs in the Municipal polls.
The permission was required as earlier the Municipal elections used to be held through ballot papers. However, Governor NN Vohra during the Governor’s rule had used the Legislature powers vested with him to amend Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act for use of EVMs in the elections.
Shantmanu said they have sufficient EVMs available for the elections here but the engineers, who have to sensitize them have gone out for Assembly elections in five States.
“When the engineers return from the elections, the machines will be sensitized,” he said.
However, it was the State Government, which has to take final decision on when to hold the Municipal elections.
On their part, the CEO office has completed all formalities on March 31, as desired by the Governor during his rule, for holding the elections in first or second week of May.
