JAMMU, Mar 29: Dogra Sadar Sabha (DSS), J&K, has expressed grave concern over the menace of intoxicating drugs and narcotics that is rapidly spreading its tentacles in Jammu region after engulfing the entire neighbouring state of Punjab.
In a press conference held here today, Th Gulchain Singh Charak, former minister and president of the Sabha expressed shock and concern over the startling facts that had emerged from the reply furnished by Police Department through Public Information Office of the Director General of Police, J&K UT, in response to the information sought by the DSS, regarding smuggling of drugs and narcotics in Jammu and Kashmir.
Charak disclosed that as per the information provided by J&K Police, the drug menace was spreading its network not only amongst the male members of different social strata of all communities, castes and religions, but also amongst the girls and the women. It was revealed that during the last three years i.e. 2019, 2020 and 2021, huge quantities of different kinds of intoxicants, costing crores of rupees, was confiscated by the J&K Police and legal procedures initiated in the court of law. The seized items included poppy straw, poppy husk, heroine, ganja, cocaine, bhang (cannabis), charas, injections, capsules and tablets, syrup bottles (like corex & codine phosphate), etc. which were large enough to endanger lives of lakhs of persons, had timely action not been taken by the police.
DCC chief, however, highlighted the public apprehension that the malice was much greater than detected and confiscated and expressed urgency to strengthen the vigil on unscrupulous elements operating through different channels. He regretted that almost in all the cases, the information provided by the police had merely stated that the challan was produced in the court of law and the seized material had been deposited in ‘court malkhana’, but it was not clear that for how long the confiscated material shall remain dumped. Charak cautioned that all steps must be taken to ensure that the seized material doesn’t get again pumped into similar kind of vicious supply/ distribution chain.
Charak urged upon the UT Government led Lt Governor, Manoj Kumar Sinha to take preventive steps and empower the concerned law enforcing agencies for early detection and taking stern action against drug smugglers to nip the evil in the bud.
Col Karan Singh Jamwal (Retd), Prem Sagar Gupta , Brig MS Jamwal (Retd) , Chander Mohan Sharma , GD Singh Charak and Amanat Ali Shah also accompanied.
