SRINAGAR, Mar 22: Dr Zabeer Ahmed, Chief Scientist at CSIR-IIIM Jammu today took over as Director of CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine Jammu, a National Institute of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, GOI with its branch laboratory at Srinagar.
He was appointed as Director of the CSIR-IIIM Jammu for a six-year term after the search-cum-selection committee met in January of this year and made recommendations.
Dr Zabeer Ahmed completed his UG (1993) and PG (Zoology) in 1995 from Jammu University, followed by his PhD (Zoology) in 2010 from Kashmir University.
Pre-clinical medication development, diabetes and obesity studies, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory illnesses are among his areas of expertise. Dr Zabeer began his career at CSIR-IIIM in 1997 and held several posts till his promotion to Director. In 2021, he was elevated to Chief Scientist.
He received the coveted CSIR Knowledge Partnership Award and visited the National Center for Natural Product Research (NCNPR), the School of Pharmacy, and the University of Mississippi in the United States as a result of his achievement.
He has received the J&K UT Award for Excellence in Science and Technology in appreciation of his substantial contributions to Science and Society. Dr Zabeer has over 70 peer-reviewed papers, including popular pieces, and five patents to his name.
Dr Zabeen has written three books and mentored seven PhD students and 35 postgraduate students. Dr Zabeer has effectively created the research frontiers in metabolic diseases and rheumatoid arthritis during his illustrious 25-year career and identified several potent leads for diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis that are currently in clinical development.
He has been working with a team of scientists who have identified three phytopharmaceutical leads for rheumatoid arthritis, one of which is in Phase I clinical trials and the other two have completed IND studies. Dr Zabeer created and licensed the technology for a herbal-based formulation for diabetic mellitus.
He is also in charge of several societal programs and extension initiatives at CSIR-IIIM Jammu, and he has received numerous grants-in-aid and collaborative projects. He is also the Nodal Officer for the Ministry of Science and Technology’s flagship effort to construct two Industrial Biotech Parks in J&K UT.
He held numerous key roles due to his extensive experience in science and administration, including Head of CSIR-IIIM Srinagar Branch Laboratory and Engineering Wing of CSIR-IIIM Jammu.
