PORTUGAL, Dec 15: 3rd Coimbra Region Climate Change Congress, a premier event addressing critical environmental challenges, was held at the Madalena Biscaia Perdigão Auditorium in Figueira da Foz.
Organized by the Intermunicipal Community of the Coimbra Region (CIM Região de Coimbra), the Municipality of Figueira da Foz, and the University of Coimbra, the event brought together global experts to discuss climate change adaptation strategies.
Dr Varun Suthra, an internationally recognized expert in sustainable development, delivered the keynote address, drawing attention to India’s ancient cultural ethos of environmental stewardship. Quoting from the Vedas and other revered scriptures, Dr Suthra emphasized that sustainability has been a cornerstone of India’s way of life for millennia.
In his presentation, Dr Suthra showcased India’s net-zero emission goals and shared the exemplary work of the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), which has prioritized sustainability since its inception. His core message—“Act Fast. Act Together.”—stressed the urgency of a collective global approach to tackle climate change effectively.
The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Jorge Brito, Executive Secretary of CIM Região de Coimbra, who played a pivotal role in shaping the congress. Other notable attendees included Emídio Sousa, Secretary of State for the Environment, Amílcar Falcão, Rector of the University of Coimbra, Pedro Santana Lopes, Mayor of Figueira da Foz, and representatives from the United Nations.
Dr Suthra’s address was received with great enthusiasm by the diverse audience, which included policy makers, municipal leaders, academicians, and climate advocates. Reflecting on the event, Dr Suthra remarked: “The ancient wisdom of our ancestors offers timeless solutions for contemporary challenges. It is imperative for nations to work together to foster sustainable practices and address the global climate crisis.”xxx
