SRINAGAR, July 11: National Conference (NC) president Dr Farooq Abdullah led senior party leaders and functionaries in offering Fatiha and floral tribute at the Mazar-e-Anwar of Madr-e-Meharban Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah, on the solemn occasion of her 25th death anniversary today. Among the senior leaders present were Haji Ali Muhammad Sagar, Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, Chowdhary Muhammad Ramzan, Abdul Rahim Rather, Sakina Itoo, Mubarak Gul, Shameema Firdous, Showkat Mir, MLAs. In addition, prominent functionaries from the media, social media cell, Youth National Conference (YNC), Women’s wing, Minority wing and parent body were also in attendance.
A similar commemorative function was held at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan, Jammu, where party members gathered to pay their respects and remember the contributions of Madr-e-Meharban to the people of J&K.
Later in the day, Dr Farooq Abdullah offered Friday congregational prayers at the Asar-e-Sharief, Hazratbal.
Meanwhile, NC chief spokesperson and MLA Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to honouring the martyrs of July 13. He said that the Omar Abdullah Government would ensure the restoration of public holidays on July 13 and December 5, which hold historical significance for the region.
Speaking to reporters after paying tribute at the mausoleum of Madr-e-Meharban Begum Akbar Jehan on her 25th death anniversary, Tanvir assured that the NC would continue its tradition of paying homage to those who laid down their lives. “People should not worry—we will fulfill our promises, and the holiday on July 13 will be restored,” he said.
Tanvir also reiterated the NC’s long-standing demand for the restoration of Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He stressed that decisions affecting the region must be taken by elected representatives and not be dependent on the Raj Bhawan, emphasizing the importance of local governance and democratic autonomy.
