JAMMU, Nov 16: In a breakthrough for spine care in the Tricity, Dr Aditya Gupta, Consultant – Spine Surgery and Orthopaedics at Paras Hospital, Panchkula, has successfully performed the region’s first endoscopic spine surgery under local anaesthesia with the patient fully awake in a private setup.
The patient, who was suffering from multiple co-morbidities and cardiac issues and was denied clearance for General Anaesthesia at all the major hospitals, underwent the procedure using a cutting-edge transforaminal endoscopic approach that requires only a 6-8 mm skin incision. The surgery was performed with the patient awake, responsive, and breathing on their own-eliminating the need for general anaesthesia and reducing the risks often associated with it.
According to Dr Aditya Gupta, awake endoscopic spine surgery is a major advancement in patient comfort and safety. “This technique allows us to do selectively indicated spine surgery through a keyhole opening under direct endoscopic vision. Because the patient is awake, we can precisely identify the pain-generating structures and avoid nerve injury. Recovery is faster, blood loss is negligible, and the patient can walk within an hour,” he said.
This pioneering step by Dr Aditya Gupta marks a new chapter in modern spine surgery in the region, bringing global-standard technology and expertise closer to home.
Dr Aditya Gupta has done his MBBS from ASCOMS & Hospital Jammu and MS Orthopaedics from Government Medical College, Jammu. After that he did his Senior Residency from PGI Chandigarh and Fellowship in Spine Surgery, from PGI Chandigarh (AIR-1). He also did his further Fellowships in Spine from Stavya Hospital, Ahmedabad and Indian Spinal Injuries Center New Delhi. He is the son of renowned orthopaedic surgeon HoD Orthopaedics, ASCOMS and Hospital Jammu, Dr Rajesh Gupta.
