JAMMU, Aug 18: Kanjkan-a collection of poems for children, written by senior Dogri poet Balwan Singh Jamoria, entitled ‘ Kanjkan ‘ was released today in an on-line programme organized by Dogri Sanstha, Jammu.
This is Jamoria’s sixth book in Dogri and he has mainly written for children and youngsters.
Prof Shiv Dev Singh Manhas, Head of the Dogri Department, University of Jammu was chief guest on the occasion and Dr Sheetal Sharma, Assistant Professor, Government Degree College, R S Pura read a Paper on critical evaluation of the released book. Balwan Singh Jamoria also shared his views about children literature in Dogri and recited some of the poems from the book.
Prof Shiv Dev Singh Manhas, in his speech, laid stress on the importance of children literature, especially in Dogri. Himself an author of many works on children literature, he said that importance of children literature cannot be undermined. He pointed out that the greatest names in world literature realized this fact and wrote for children, including greats like Tagore.
In his opinion, Dogri is in dire need of children’s literature to connect our younger generation to their mother tongue. He complimented Jamoria for his meaningful effort in this direction.
Prof Lalit Magotra, President Dogri Sanstha, in his introductory remarks, delved on the subject of children literature and said that creation of such literature is a very difficult task, as one has to understand child’s psychology, imagine her/his interests and the level of mental growth and also transport herself/himself back to her/his childhood to actualize the mental state of a present day child. “Though the children literature may appear simple but behind this simplicity a herculean effort has to be put in,” he added.
The programme was anchored and conducted in a very lively manner by Pawan Verma, who also provided technical support for the smooth functioning of the programme.
