SRINAGAR, May 21: Doctors at Government Medical College (GMC), Baramulla, have successfully removed an ovarian tumour weighing over 7 kilograms from a 55-year-old woman through a high-risk surgery.
According to doctors, the patient-hailing from Rafiabad-was referred to the Department of General and Minimal Access Surgery, GMC Baramulla, with symptoms of recurrent intestinal obstruction, severe respiratory distress, weight loss, and gross left hydronephrosis, as documented by ultrasound.
“Upon investigation, a massive intra-abdominal swelling occupying the entire peritoneal cavity and pelvis was detected,” the doctors said.
Further evaluation using contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) of the abdomen revealed a giant tumour originating from the left ovary, causing significant compression of the gastrointestinal tract and the left ureter.
“To address the condition, a high-risk surgery was performed, jointly executed by the Departments of General Surgery and Obstetrics & Gynaecology,” the doctors added.
Following the surgery, a large mucinous cystadenoma of the left ovary, weighing 7.4 kg and invading the left fallopian tube, was discovered. The tumour had completely filled the peritoneal cavity.
“The tumour, along with extensive mucinous exudation in the pelvic cavity, was successfully removed in toto through a left salpingo-oophorectomy and peritoneal lavage,” the doctors said.
The tumour has been sent for histopathological examination, while the patient was successfully extubated and shifted to the recovery unit.
Doctors noted that such high-risk procedures are routinely performed at GMC Baramulla, due to the infrastructural support provided by Principal Prof. (Dr.) Majid Jahangir, which, they said., ensures high-quality healthcare and advanced surgical capabilities.
The surgical team included Dr. Mehmood Rashid, Associate Professor, Dr. Mansoor Banday, Assistant Professor, Dr. Harbinder Singh, Consultant Surgeon, and Dr. Tariq, Senior Resident from the Department of General Surgery.
From the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, it included Dr. Shazia, Assistant Professor, OT Technicians Ab Hamid and Junaid. From the Anaesthesia Team, it included Dr. Yasir, Consultant, and Dr. Safoora, Senior Resident.
Meanwhile, the Department of Ophthalmology at GMC Baramulla has been equipped today with a state-of-the-art teaching microscope-the Artevo 800.
Developed by Carl Zeiss, the Artevo 800 is a 3D operating microscope with an image-guided system.
According to GMC authorities, the high-end microscope has been installed in the Ophthalmology theatre and is expected to significantly benefit both undergraduate and postgraduate students by enhancing surgical training and precision.
“Beyond academic excellence, the addition of this microscope will elevate the quality of surgeries to the highest standards, directly improving patient care and treatment outcomes,” GMC said.
