JAMMU, Aug 23: Alleging harassment and police inaction under “political pressure,” a Jammu-based doctor couple on Saturday sought intervention of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and DGP J&K Nalin Prabhat for protection, claiming their family faces “serious life threats.”
At a press conference, noted urologist Dr Vivek Gorka and his wife, anesthesia consultant Dr Swati Tidyal, said they have been under “continuous mental trauma” due to threats from local miscreants allegedly backed by their tenants who run a medical store in Bishnah. The doctors accused the duo of illegally occupying their shop and shielding themselves under political influence.
“Despite repeated complaints, the police have taken no concrete action, leaving our family vulnerable,” Dr Gorka said. He alleged that even his aged, ailing mother was not spared during one of the confrontations.
Narrating a recent incident of August 21, the couple said that despite a court stay on the disputed shop since 2023, the accused attempted illegal construction with the help of 20–25 men. “They arrived in cars, hurled abuses, and attacked us with sticks and iron rods,” Dr Gorka claimed, adding that he sustained injuries while other family members, including women and children, were also assaulted.
The doctors further alleged that the attackers followed them to the hospital and repeated the assault, while the police remained passive. “The officials arrived only after the second attack,” Dr Tidyal said, adding that instead of proceeding against the culprits, the police registered “frivolous FIRs” against her husband.
Expressing fear of fresh attacks, the couple appealed for immediate intervention. “We only want to live and work peacefully as medical professionals. If anything happens to us, the tenants, their supporters and the police officials shielding them should be held accountable,” Dr Tidyal said.
The couple urged authorities to ensure impartial action and restore their sense of safety.
