Sir,
Two incidents of assault on doctors by their attendants occurred in the top medical institutions of J&K. One such incident occurred in GMC Jammu on 16th July when two lady doctors were manhandled by a lady attendant of a patient and the other incident occurred on 22 July in GMC Srinagar where a resident doctor was slapped by the attendant of a patient. Both these incidents took place due to the death of the patients. The doctors are treated as next to God. This is why when a serious patient is treated and saved with the efforts of the doctor we generally say ” God has saved our dear one” while the patient was saved by the timely and best treatment of the doctor. So the assault on the doctors is in no way justified. The reason of the death of the patient may be due to the late reaching out to the doctor or pre occupation of the concerned doctor with other serious patient. No doubt there are very rare cases due to the negligence of the doctor which must be probed by the authorities and not assaulted by the attendants. When the doctors go on strike, the life of other serious patients is also put on risk due to disruption of medical services. Due to the heavy rush in hospitals especially in government hospitals and shortage of doctors such ugly incidents occur. Such incidents generally happen in Emergency department where most of the patients are serious. The senior doctors are not available in the emergency department after the working hours of the hospital. The management of the hospital should make arrangement of round the clock availability of senior doctors to deal with the serious patients when they need them so that no precious life is lost due to the deficiency in medical care.
