JAMMU/UDHAMPUR, Apr 16: District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA) of Jammu and Udhampur today convened meetings of the Under Trial Review Committee (UTRC) to examine cases of under-trial prisoners and recommend the release of eligible individuals in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines and National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) SOPs.
In Jammu, the meeting was held under the guidance of YP Bourney, Chairman DLSA and Principal District & Sessions Judge, and supervised by Smriti Sharma, Secretary DLSA.
It took place in the office chamber of the PDJ and saw participation from key officials, including the Additional Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Senior Superintendent of Police Jammu, jail superintendents of Central Jail Kot Bhalwal and District Jail Amphalla, and the Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel Jammu.
Similarly, in Udhampur, the UTRC meeting was chaired by Virinder Singh Bhou, Chairperson DLSA and Principal District & Sessions Judge Udhampur.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner Udhampur, Senior Superintendent of Police Udhampur, jail superintendent, public prosecutors, and legal aid officials.
Both meetings focused on under-trial prisoners who have either spent a prolonged time in jail without trial or lacked proper legal representation.
The committees reviewed pending cases and recommended the release of eligible inmates to ensure timely justice and uphold the rights of prisoners.
Discussions also covered future action plans, including the regular conduct of review meetings, maintenance of consolidated data sheets for case tracking, and preparation of quarterly reports for monitoring progress.
The chairpersons of both DLSAs appreciated the commitment of all stakeholders for their active participation and collective efforts in addressing the issues of under-trial prisoners.
