* Discusses traffic mgmt system in Jammu

JAMMU, July 22: Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar chaired a meeting today to take stock of the damages due to torrential rain and restoration works initiated by the district administrations and executing agencies across the division.
The Deputy Commissioners from across Jammu division, Heads of Departments and concerned officials from executing agencies apprised the Divisional Commissioner of the situation of their respective districts after the recent torrential rain.
The Deputy Commissioners briefed about the situation in terms of road connectivity, power, water supply, functioning of other essential services like health and medical services, precautionary measures and advisories for public safety. They also informed about the damage to property and loss of lives.
The Divisional Commissioner directed for establishing 24X7 control rooms in all districts for reporting and responding to emergency calls. He further asked for issuing public safety and Traffic advisories and wide publicity of the same.
The officials from Public Works Department and Border Roads Organization were asked to keep their men and machinery ready for restoration of the road connectivity in the minimum possible time. Chief Engineer Jal Shakti was asked to ensure adequate supply of clean drinking water, especially in the areas which are dependent on dug wells.
The Power Development Department was asked to ensure sufficient stock of transformers for speedy restoration of power supply. Directions were also issued to focus on prevention of water borne diseases.
The Divisional Commissioner directed the Deputy Commissioners to provide ex-gratia relief to the affected people under SDRF and Red Cross.
They were directed to submit a detailed report of the damages suffered and the repair and restoration works undertaken in their respective districts by the evening.
Meanwhile, Divisional Commissioner discussed the actionable points for a comprehensive and robust traffic management system in Jammu City, while chairing a meeting of Multi-Disciplinary Committee.
The meeting was attended by IGP Traffic J&K, Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Commissioner JMC, Vice Chairman JDA and Transport Commissioner Jammu, Chief Engineer PWD(R&B), SSP Traffic Jammu City.
The meeting held threadbare discussion on traffic planning and management system, decongestion measures, increasing road capacity and infrastructure, encroachment control and relocation of street vendors, identification of one-way routes and traffic flow adjustment, safety and accident reduction measures.
The Divisional Commissioner directed for constituting a joint team of officials from Traffic, Transport, District Administration, JMC and JDA to conduct a survey to identify traffic congestion points, spots to be designated as no parking zones, one way routes, Taxi/Auto/Bus Stands and other steps necessary for improving the traffic management system in the city.
The meeting decided to further hold detailed discussions in the next meeting on the basis of points and observation reported by the joint team of officials after their visit.
