SRINAGAR, Jan 19: The Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir (DHSK) today asked the districts to nominate Nodal Officers for a prescription audit even as the CMOs have been directed to constitute a District level Prescription Audit Committee (PAC).
The DHSK said that in this connection a Divisional Level Prescription Audit Committee is also being constituted which will make the necessary recommendations based on inputs received from the district.
“It is enjoined upon all the Chief Medical Officers & Medical Superintendents of Kashmir Division to nominate one “Nodal Officer” for a District Hospital & for each Sub-District Hospital of their respective districts, who shall collect photocopies of at least 1% (one percentage) of prescriptions on the random daily basis written by the Government doctors in OPDs,” the DHSK stated.
Besides, it has directed the Chief Medical Officer to constitute a District level “Prescription Audit Committee” (PAC), comprising of doctors on administrative posts, excluding the consultants.
About the terms of reference for the Prescription Audit Committee, it will scrutinize prescriptions collected and will see whether the prescriptions are legibly written in capital letters with the name of the doctor, his/her signature & registration number.
It will also see if the generic drugs are prescribed and preference is given to the drugs that are available free in hospital supplies. It will also check the unnecessary test, diagnostics; procedures and referrals to private clinics/ specialists without requirement.
The PAC will also see if the drugs are prescribed in contravention to the provisions of the Drugs & Cosmetic Act & Regularizations. “Prescription Audit Committee(s) shall prepare & submit fortnightly reports to this Directorate,” DHSK directed.
Also, DHSK said, Divisional Level Prescription Audit Committee, which is being constituted, shall prepare a comprehensive monthly report “along with their recommendations, highlighting actionable points that shall be submitted to the Administrative Department,” it said.
