The clips, which went viral on Monday, reportedly show Rao engaging in inappropriate behaviour with multiple women in uniform at his official workplace, triggering political uproar and public condemnation.
According to the official suspension order, Rao’s conduct is “unseemly for a government employee” and has “embarrassed the government.”
The order added that the State Government is “prima facie satisfied” that Rao should remain suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
During the suspension period, Rao is not allowed to leave the headquarters without prior permission from the State Government.
Rao, a 1993-batch IPS officer, has served in multiple senior capacities in Karnataka’s police force. The suspension marks an unusually swift response from the Siddaramaiah-led state government, which acted decisively amid growing political pressure.
The case highlights continuing concerns over misconduct among senior officials in the police and administrative services. Social media users widely circulated the video clips, prompting demands from opposition leaders and civil society groups for immediate action.
The Government has yet to provide further details about the ongoing investigation, but disciplinary proceedings against Rao are expected to follow. The suspension order underlines the administration’s commitment to holding officials accountable, especially in cases involving alleged sexual impropriety and workplace misconduct.
This development comes against a backdrop of increased scrutiny of senior officers in India, with similar incidents reported in other states over the past year, raising questions about institutional safeguards and internal disciplinary mechanisms within law enforcement. (UNI)
