Development of Micro-Hydel Power Projects

Sir,
Please refer to Daily Excelsior article Dated January 5, 2016 on the role of JAKEDA in developing Micro/Mini Hydro Power Projects in J&K State. All of us know that J&K State is very rich in water resources. In almost all hilly areas we see large number of rivers flowing with huge quantity of water, but this valuable natural gift has not been utilised properly for the production of hydro-electric power which is safe, cheap and environment friendly. We can construct hundreds of mini-hydel projects on these rivers and can meet the local area wise demand of electricity. Crores of rupees can be saved which now we pay to purchase electricity.
Pertinent to mention that river Tawi has great potential for construction of Mini-hydel projects throughout the hilly area it flows. Many years ago a survey was conducted by some agency of the State Govt to construct a mini-hydel project over river Tawi at a place called “Darti” in village Gharian-Kalan of Tehsil Chenani. The DPR was completed and it was told that mini-hydel project will be constructed at this place very soon but years passed  and nothing was done. Again after some years another site just ahead of previous survey spot was identified near village “Jig” and reports prepared and submitted. The people were hopeful that these projects would provide employment to the locals and large quantity of electricity would be generated but nothing happened like that. The JAKEDA or whichever agency has been assigned this task, they should conduct detailed survey on whole length of river Tawi to find out that how many power projects can be constructed. This should go on without any politics because in our State everything is struck in between like that of Chenani Degree College, Patnitop Ropeway and Patnitop-Gourikund road projects which and many others could not see the light of the day till now.
Yours etc….
