‘Households compensated, written to CM for losses suffered by business organizations’

RAMBAN, June 1: The people of mountainous Ramban district are still awaiting some rehabilitation package to restart their lives after the devastation caused by the flashfloods triggered by cloudbursts on April 20 shattered the lives of these people with many losing their homes and others suffering massive damage to their business organizations.

Sources informed that many residential structures in Ramban were fully damaged due to the flashfloods which also hit commercial organizations like shops, hotels etc along with many vehicles.
Some locals informed that debris clearing was still going on and a major area of the town has been cleared.
They also said that the administration has engaged labourers to clear debris from the town and so far they have restored essential services like water and power supply in the town but no rehabilitation package has been announced so far for the losses suffered by the people in the calamity.
“In certain areas like Seri, water supply has not been fully restored,” more locals informed adding that almost all the roads in the town have been restored.
Jagdeep, a local whose 10 shops were damaged in the natural calamity informed that all those who visited them only offered assurances but nothing concrete has been done so far to rehabilitate the calamity hit people.
He hoped some rehab package soon from the Union Government.
Another businessman, Latif Giri, a hotelier remembers the day when flashfloods hit his hotel putting him to a loss of Rs. 1.5 crore as extensive damage was caused to his property.
“Debris was filled in my hotel complex and only by yesterday it has been cleared after I engaged a large number of labourers on my own for the job,” he claimed adding that his vehicle and other things in the hotel were destroyed and repair work of the building was underway.
However, some locals were happy as the CM Omar Abdullah had visited them along with officers and other Ministers.
A local leader Suraj Singh has appealed to PM Narindra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for some immediate rehabilitation package.
When contacted, ADC Ramban, Varunjeet Singh Charak informed that compensation to households hit by flashfloods in Ramban was given @ Rs. 1.30 lakh and Rs. 1.21 lakh as per the government recommended rates for damage caused to the residential structures involving single houses.
“No compensation has been given to the business organizations and traders for the losses they suffered as special permission is required for that for which we have written to the Chief Minister,” he maintained.
