It is a matter of concern that the reading levels of children have declined instead of rising up. The Annual Status of Education Report-2012 published by Pratham, a community building organisations shows a sharp decline in children’s reading levels over the last three years. The decline is attributed to continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) process which is not properly implemented in schools throughout the country.
The scheme was launched to constantly monitor the performance of students. They were to be apprised of their weaknesses and strengths during an academic session. Those who could not perform are to be given extra coaching to bring them at the level of meritorious candidates. However, the blame does not lies squarely with the teachers over the poor performance of students. It is necessary that teacher undergo rigorous training after they are appointed. Otherwise no scheme is going to yield results.
