Sir,
This has reference to the statement of BJP chief spokesperson and national executive member Jitendra Singh. He has rightly said that there is a need for a rational and objective discussion on various proposals incorporated in the Police Bill.
The provisions which need to be thoroughly debated include police being vested with magesterial powers instead of a civilian magistrate, police officers be treated always on duty making it difficult to prosecute erring policeman and an adult member of the public can be arrested for not giving assistance to a police officer. These provisions seem be draconian in nature and need to be deleted. At present the magesterial powers rest with a Civil Officer who is responsible for the action on ground.
What we need is a bill which may take due concern of the citizens and at the same time ensure that the police does not act in a manner which may create fear on among people instead of alleviating the same.
Yours etc….
