
Fish die in holy springs of Mattan

ANANTNAG, Dec 16: A sizable number of fish in the holy springs of Martand (Mattan) in Anantnag district of Kashmir Valley and its downstream have died over last one week creating a wave of shock among the devotees.
According to sources, soon after receiving the information from the president of Martand Tirath Trust, Ashok Sidha over the death of fish in the holy springs of Martand in Anantnag district of Kashmir Valley a team of Fisheries Department on the directives of District Development Commissioner, Anantnag, Syed Fakhrudin Hamid rushed to Mattan to find the sudden cause of the death of fish in the holy springs.
The team examined the fish and administered the medicines but the disease could not be controlled and cause of the disease has not been ascertained so far. However, the Fisheries Department is on the job and has taken the samples of the fish as well as water on the directives of DC Anantnag who officials said is personally monitoring the situation.
The officials said probably it is a fungal infection which mostly takes place in this season but without proper investigation it will be premature to reach on any conclusion.
Officials said to ascertain the cause, the Fisheries Department approached the Dean of Fisheries Department SKUAST, Kashmir on the directives of DC Anantnag and a team of scientists and Microbiologists visited the holy shrine today along with the officials of Fisheries Department from Anantnag. They took the water samples and collected dissection of live stock. The Department is expecting report from the SKUAST within two -three days after which they will reach any conclusion about the cause of the disease.
DC Anantnag Syed Fakhrudin Hamid told Excelsior that the matter was brought in his notice by the Prabhandak Committee Mattan and soon a team was sent to the area to ascertain the cause and take remedial measures. However the team found it is morbid fish and the disease is localized. To ascertain the cause we approached the Dean Fisheries Department of SKUAST, Kashmir. Their team visited today and it took the samples of water and fish and the report is expected within three -four days.
Former president of the Martand Trust and senior K P leader, M K Yogi while expressing his concern over the sudden death urged the administration to take quick measures in containing the infection and save the remaining fish in the springs and the stream.
