DB seeks appearance of SP

Srinagar, May 21: The State High Court sought personal appearance of former Superintendent of Police Crime Branch with regard to theft of Holy Quran from Shri Pratap Singh (SPS) museum.
The personal appearance of the officer has been directed by the Court after submissions of SSP Crime Shahid Mehraj and additional SP Aftab Mir who were present before the court, that the investigation of theft was conducted by SP Masood Beigh who is presently posted in Human Rights Commission.
Beigh was entrusted with the investigation of stealing of Holy Quran which bears the seal of Emperor Aurangzeb and over the closure report filed by CB court had expressed its displeasure over the closure report as ‘untraced’ and had sought personal appearance of officials.
“Mr. Beigh to remain present on next date. Meanwhile registry to send for entire record of case FIR No. 106/2003 P/S Rajbagh from the court of learned Forest Magistrate”, directed the Division Bench of Justice MH Attar and Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey.
The record pertaining to theft of Quran was sought after the Advocate General of the State submitted before the court that the closure report with regard to investigation of theft has already been accepted by the court of Forest Magistrate way back in the year 2013.
Court posted the matter for further consideration on June 3 and exempted the personal appearance of SSP and additional SP till further orders and directed SP Beigh to remain present as he is the investigating officer in the case.
The Holy Quran had been stolen from Shri Pratap Singh (SPS) Museum in the year 2003 and in this regard FIR was also lodged in Police Station Rajbagh, Srinagar. Court has expressed its displeasure about the closure of the case as ‘untraced’.
High Court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by a Srinagar based social organization, Valley Citizen’s Council,) seeking directions for the protection and conservation of artifacts, monuments and excavation sites in Kashmir.
