SRINAGAR, Jan 15: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Cyber Crime Investigation Centre for Excellence (CICE), Ramnish Gupta today said cyber frauds are increasing rapidly with the expansion of digital platforms, stressing that public awareness remains the strongest defence against online scams.
Addressing media persons during a cybercrime awareness programme in Srinagar, Gupta said cybercriminals are constantly changing their modus operandi, making awareness and basic precautions crucial. “Awareness is the strongest tool to protect people from cybercrime. Anyone can fall victim if basic precautions are not followed,” he said.
The SSP briefed journalists on a wide range of cybercrimes, including digital arrest scams, online investment and job frauds, phishing and vishing, APK file frauds, call-merging scams, sextortion, WhatsApp hacking, fake government links, OTP and CVV theft, call-forwarding frauds and so-called ‘pig butchering’ scams.

He stressed the need for maintaining proper cyber hygiene and urged victims to report incidents immediately. “People should report cybercrimes without delay on the 1930 helpline or through www.cybercrime. gov.in. The helpline is available 24/7, and timely reporting can help save the hard-earned money of citizens,” Gupta said, adding that the objective was to ensure awareness reaches even “the last person in the queue.”
The programme was attended by DSP CICE Kashmir Ashiq Hussain Malik and Inspectors Arif Ahmad, Nasir Syed Kirmani, Arshad Mustafa and Masroor Ahmad.
In a separate initiative, police in Awantipora organised a cybercrime awareness programme at Khrew under the supervision of the Station House Officer of Police Station Khrew. “Officers educated the public about common cyber threats, safe online practices, and responsible use of social media,” a spokesperson said.
He added participants were advised not to share OTPs, passwords, or bank details; to remain cautious during online transactions; and to avoid engaging with unknown individuals on social media.
