JAMMU, Mar 18: The Central University of Jammu today inaugurated a two-day national seminar on “Role of Media in Promoting Indian Knowledge System,” bringing together scholars, media professionals and researchers for discussions on linking modern media with India’s knowledge traditions.
The seminar, sponsored by ICSSR-NWRC, is being organised by the Department of Mass Communication and New Media at the university campus.
The inaugural session was held at the Swami Vivekanand Auditorium in hybrid mode in the presence of several eminent dignitaries.
Registrar Prof Yashwant Sinha, while felicitating the chief guest Padma Shri Mohan Singh Slathia, said, “Media today is the most effective tool for spreading India’s knowledge traditions. With digital platforms and social media, we can reach the younger generation in a more engaging way, especially in light of the National Education Policy 2020.”
Chairperson Prof Bharat Bhushan and Head of Department Dr Abhay S D Rajput also attended the programme.
Addressing the gathering, chief guest Mohan Singh Slathia stressed the importance of native languages in preserving heritage.
“The Indian Knowledge System can truly be promoted only through our mother tongues. Languages like Dogri carry our cultural wisdom,” he said, adding that while social media has wide reach, its use must be responsible and balanced.
Delivering the keynote address, senior journalist Harbans Nagoke said, “A journalist must never tire, never hesitate and always remain passionate. Media has a responsibility to promote Indian knowledge while staying rooted in culture.”
Convenor Prof Paramveer Singh highlighted the relevance of traditional knowledge to sustainable development, stating, “Our knowledge systems promote sustainable living and environmental balance, aligning closely with global goals.”
Co-convenor Dr Umesh Singh, in his vote of thanks, said, “The idea of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ reflects the universal message of our knowledge system, which is relevant even today.”
The seminar will continue on March 19 with technical sessions and a valedictory function.
