JAMMU, Nov 20: The team of doctors and nurses at SDDM Hospital, Channi Himmat, headed by the eminent neo-natologist Dr Vikas Mahajan successfully managed a newborn baby with severe anaemia.
The haemoglobin level was found to be 6 grams whereas, a normal baby’s HB levels are 16-17 grams. The baby even had a cardiac failure as well as generalized edema, medically termed as hydrops. This is the condition resulting from fluid accumulation in at least two fetal compartments.
The mother of the baby had multiple previous abortions secondary to Rh incompatibility. This is a condition in pregnancy in which the mother has Rh-negative blood and her baby has Rh-positive blood. This condition is quite serious because of mismatch of blood group of mother and baby.
Due to the severe anemia, the baby had dangerously low blood oxygen level of 70 at the time of birth. Normally, this parameter should be more than 98%. Immediately after birth, the blood of the newborn was changed with negative blood. Infact, the procedure was carried out thrice to bring the hemoglobin and bilirubin to normal levels.
This baby was the last hope of the family after multiple abortions, and the successful birth and post-birth management for this case is seen as quite a feat in Jammu Medical circles. Dr Mahajan holds an MD in Neonatology from PGI Chandigarh and has been a gold medalist from GMC, Jammu. He has also been a fellow at the leading children hospital of Canada, McMaster Children Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario and has successfully managed more than a thousand high risk births in Jammu region.
