SRINAGAR, Aug 21: To strengthen the fight against human trafficking in the digital era, the Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir, in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), today organized a one-day Union Territory-level conference on anti-human trafficking at Tagore Hall here.
A spokesperson said the conference aimed to raise awareness among students in particular and the public in general about human trafficking and its wide social impact. “It provided a platform for stakeholders to share their experiences, highlight pitfalls in the existing framework, and identify effective strategies to prevent trafficking and support victims,” he said.
The spokesperson said the event was organized under the guidance of DIG Crime Branch Jammu and Kashmir and the overall supervision of Inspector General of Police Crime Jammu and Kashmir, Sujit Kumar, who welcomed the guests and participants at the outset.
Special DG Coordination, S.J.M. Gillani, who attended as the chief guest, appealed for collective responsibility in tackling the menace, stressing that Jammu and Kashmir Police is at the forefront of fighting this crime with the cooperation of society.
The spokesperson said expert speakers included Rajesh Mani, trainer and consultant for India for Children, and Ravi Kant, advocate at the Supreme Court of India, founder of Shakti Vahini, and national convener of Just Rights for Children. “Both experts delivered lectures and presentations offering valuable suggestions and strategies to dismantle trafficking networks and break the cycle of exploitation,” he said.
He added that participants stressed the need to address trafficking challenges in the digital age, where online platforms are increasingly misused for exploitation. “The conference also highlighted the importance of inter-agency coordination, stronger legal mechanisms, and victim rehabilitation,” he said.
He said mementoes were presented to the chief guest and guest speakers in recognition of their contributions. “The proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks by Mohammad Fiesel Qureshi, SSP (SO to IGP Crime), who acknowledged the efforts of all departments, officers, students, and civil society members for their active participation,” he said.
The conference was attended by senior police officials, including Alok Kumar, ADGP Director of Fire and Emergency Services Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttam Chand, IGP Headquarters PHQ, along with judicial officers, senior officers from PHQ, and representatives from various Government departments such as the Social Welfare Department, Women and Child Development Department, and Labour Department.
