KATHUA, Apr 19: In a landmark move under the BNS (New Criminal Laws), Billawar police in Kathua district has led to the conviction of four persons namely Shiva, son of Dharam Paul of Phillaur (Jalandhar ) at present Billawar, Raju, son of Nanku of Phillaur at present Billawar, Manju, son of Mahi Dass of Jagraon at Billawar, Rakesh, son of Bansi Lal of Ward No 06 Billawar for intoxication at public places and disorderly conduct. The court of JMIC Billawar delivered the verdict today, marking a progressive step towards reformative justice.
The incident took place on Friday in the jurisdiction of the Police Station Billawar, where the accused persons were found intoxicated and creating a public nuisance. They were promptly arrested, subjected to a medical examination and presented before the concerned Judicial Magistrate.
Rather than imposing traditional imprisonment, the court opted for community service as a corrective measure. “All the four convicts have been directed to perform community service at Court Complex Billawar for three hours from today and tomorrow at SDH Billawar for three hours.
This provision under the new criminal laws emphasizes rehabilitation and community engagement for minor offenses, promoting reform over punishment. The effort by Kathua Police demonstrates a shift towards a more constructive approach in addressing public misdemeanours, setting a precedent for similar cases in the future.
