SRINAGAR, Apr 23: Security forces today launched an operation and rescued a cop who was abducted by militants tonight in South Kashmir and a militant was arrested in Kulgam district while India and Pakistani troops exchanged firing along the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir this evening.
Militants tonight abducted a police man identified as constable Javid Jabbar son of Abdul Jabbar from Chatwatan Vihil village in Shopian district of South Kashmir. He is posted in the escort duty of Sub Divisional Police Officer at Zakura in Srinagar. The cop was abducted from his house by a group of three militants.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar told Excelsior that police and Army launched a rescue operation in the area. “He was rescued from the nearby village. As security forces cordoned off the village, militants fled leaving the cop behind”, he said.
And a militant of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen was today arrested from South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. He has been identified as Shakir Alie of Damhal Hanjipora of the district.
He was arrested this evening at a checkpoint that was established by Kulgam Police, 34 RR of Army and CRPF 18 batallion of CROR at various locations to apprehend him.
“At one such checkpoint in Nihama, the militant was spotted and parties swing into action to apprehend him. The militant tried to lob a hand grenade in an attempt to escape but was unable to do so as the parties tactfully apprehended him,” police said.
Police said that a hand grenade, one handgun and six rounds of ammunition compatible with the handgun have been recovered from his possession.
A case (under FIR number 48/2020) has been registered in Police Station DH Pora. He had gone missing on 14 April 2020 and had joined HM but was nabbed after security forces received specific input about his movement.
It would be pertinent to mention here that the militant was apprehended earlier in 2018 as well against his attempts to join militancy but due to lack of evidence, he was released without charges.
In the meantime, Pakistani troops violated ceasefire along the LoC in Tanghdar sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district this evening.
An official said that the Pakistani troops started mortar shelling in the sector in the evening and Indian troops retaliated and the firing continued for 15 minutes. He said that the mortar firing has stopped but small arms firing is going on intermittently.
He said that Pakistani troops of 645 Mujahideen Batallion targeted Rawan and Darshan posts of 3-Grenadiers but the troops fired back targeting the Pakistani forward posts.
