JAMMU, Apr 18: Bari Brahmana police today arrested a police constable Mohammad Saleem along with his service weapon-an AK-47 rifle with which he was absconding since April 13 after opening firing and injuring a civilian at Teli Basti in Bari Barahamana area of Samba district.
His two sons-Irshad Ahmad and Mushtaq Ahmad-who were also involved in the firing incident managed to escape when the police apprehended the constable from a forest area late last night.
Mohammad Saleem was arrested along with AK-47 rifle and two magazines, police said.
On a tip off, Bari Barahamana police teams headed by SHO Inspector Arun Jamwal raided the forest area and after a hot chased nabbed the constable and seized AK rifle from him. His two sons fled away taking cover of darkness and jungle. Police continued a hunt to nab his sons.
Police said nine cases including under Section 307 and 452 had already been registered against the constables in Samba district only but he continued to work in the Police Department. He had been posted as PSO with Socialist Democratic Party (SDP) leader Gursevak Singh and had opened firing on his rival over a property dispute.
A case against the PSO has already been registered at Bari Barahamana police station for further investigations. The constable was presently posted in CPO Jammu from where he had been assigned as PSO to the SDP leader.
