Consumption of drugs, narcotics by younger generation on rise: Govt

JAMMU, Apr 8: Government today said that consumption of narcotics, liquor and drugs especially by the younger generation is on rise in Jammu and Kashmir and 3473 persons were arrested during last three years for selling narcotic drugs and illicit liquor.
Replying to the question of BJP MLA from Jammu West, Sat Sharma, Finance Minister said that 3473 persons have been arrested by the police for selling narcotic items and illicit liquor during last three years till December 31, 2014.
Of these, 2180 people have been arrested in Jammu region and 1293 from Kashmir region, he said, adding that 1891 people have been arrested for selling narcotic items and 1582 such people were arrested for selling illicit liquor.
As many as 543 people have been convicted in these cases, he said adding they included 465 in Jammu and 78 in Kashmir.
About the initiatives taken by the Government to control such menace, the Minister said that a State level apex committee under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary has been constituted, which holds regular meetings for prevention of cultivation and drug trafficking in the State.
He further said that common masses are being made aware about the adverse effects of these liquor and other narcotic substances.
