The Congress leader was responding to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s remarks that restoration of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was not in his hands.
“If we raise our hands and say nothing is in our control, people lose faith in us. We must put all our strength into working for them. Elected representatives can and must fight effectively for adequate compensation to the affected due to floods and closure of the national highway,” he said.
Hussain also hit out at the Centre, terming the Rs 209 crore-compensation announced for J&K as a “joke.”
“The Centre should have announced at least Rs 2,000 crore, the estimation of the damages suffered. Rs 209 crore is an insult to the people of J&K. The Congress will raise this issue, write to the Centre, and demand adequate relief,” he said.
Hussain further underlined the need for immediate damage assessment, formulation of a comprehensive report, and announcement of an economic package.
He urged the Government to prioritize the smooth movement of fruit-laden trucks and ensure better road connectivity.
On the issue of slapping PSA on MLA Doda, Mehraj Malik, Hussain said the Congress opposes such measures. “We are against it and we have already cleared our stand.”
“At the same time, the representatives must exercise restraint and respect institutions, but detaining them under such laws is unhealthy for democracy,” he said.
The remarks came on the sidelines of a one-day convention of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) in Uri.
The event was presided over by Dr. Hussain and JKPCC president Tariq Hamid Karra.
Senior leaders including MLA Irfan Hafeez Lone, MLA Nizamuddin Bhat, GM Saroori, Taj Mohi-ud-Din, and others were present.
During the convention, leaders addressed workers and supporters, raising slogans like “vote chor, gadi chor.”
They called for strengthening the Congress party at the grassroots level in Uri and across J&K.
Speakers also highlighted the rising unemployment in the Union Territory and demanded adequate compensation for fruit growers and flood-affected families, along with urgent measures to ensure smooth road and railway connectivity.
