JAMMU, Apr 12: Congress Party staged a protest dharna at Gol Market here today, under the banner of the ‘Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq’ campaign, demanding the restoration of Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

The program was organised by Pardeep Bhalla, president Block Congress Committee, Gandhi Nagar, under the leadership of District Congress Committee (DCC) Jammu Urban president, Yogesh Sawhney and it was presided over by J&K Pradesh Congress Committee working president, Raman Bhalla.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhalla said that people of Jammu and Kashmir have been systematically deprived of their democratic rights ever since the downgrading of the State. He emphasized that the restoration of Statehood is not merely a political demand but a constitutional and moral obligation that must be fulfilled without further delay. He criticized the continued Central control over local governance, stating that it has weakened democratic institutions and alienated the people.
He reiterated that J&K has a rich political and administrative legacy which cannot be undermined or replaced by prolonged bureaucratic rule. He said that empowering the people through an elected government is essential for ensuring transparency, accountability, and balanced regional development.
Sawhney stated that the demand for Statehood resonates across every section of society in Jammu and Kashmir, cutting across political and regional lines. He said that the ‘Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq’ campaign is not just a political movement but a people’s movement aimed at reclaiming democratic governance and accountability. Sawhney highlighted that despite repeated assurances, the delay in restoring Statehood has only deepened public distrust. He asserted that the Congress party stands united in its commitment to fight for the constitutional rights of the people and will intensify its agitation until justice is delivered.
Senior leaders, Manmohan Singh, Vijay Sharma, Satish Sharma, Zaida Khan, Pawan Dev Singh, Amrit Bali, Anirudh Sawhney, Ashok Sharma, Sohit Sharma, Yashpal Sarangal and others were also present.
