JAMMU, Feb 14: The police detained over 300 Congress leaders and workers and foiled the protest march of Indian National Congress (INC) to Lt Governor’s house in the winter capital– Jammu here today.
A massive protest march was organised by the Congress Party to the Lok Bhawan (LG house) over the slogan of ‘MGNREGA Bachao’ and restoration of statehood to J&K in Jammu leading to a minor scuffle with heavy contingent of police when the later stopped the march near Jewal Chowk. All top leadership leading the march including AICC general secretary Incharge J&K affairs, Dr Sayeed Naseer Hussain ( MP), PCC president Tariq Hameed Karra, AICC general secretary & CLP Leader GA Mir, Vikar Rasool Wani, AICC Secretary Pargat Singh (MLA), PCC working presidents Raman Bhalla, Ex-DyCM Tara Chand, Ex- Ministers Mula Ram, Yogesh Sawhney, Jugal Kishore Sharma, GM Saroori, Majid Wani, Dr Manohar Lal Sharma, Yash Pal Kundal, Gurbachan Kumari Rana, Shabir Ahmed Khan; Ex-MP TS Bajwa; Legislators- Nizamudin Bhat, Irfan Hafiz Lone, Iftikhar Ahmed, Ex- Legislators Ravinder Sharma,Ved Mahajan, Th Balbir Singh, Indu Pawar, Naresh Gupta, Ashok Dogra, Subash Gupta, Sham Lal Bhagat and many others were detained near Vinayak Bazar, Jewel Chowk and taken to DPL, Jammu. However, they were released after about an hour.
Earlier, a massive gathering of Congress leaders and workers from various districts of J&K assembled at Maharaja Hari Singh Park, paid tributes to the statue of Maharaja. Senior leaders after garlanding the statue briefly addressed the large gathering.
They took out the march towards LG house carrying party flags, play cards and raising strong slogans and moved to Jewel Chowk, Vinayak Bazar Chowk in a rally. The heavy contingent of police stopped the top leadership, while the agitated youth Congress workers indulged in minor scuffle with police.
The police took away the top leaders into a police vehicle nearby to DPL Gandhi Nagar including AICC general secretary , PCC president, CLP Leader, MLAs, Ex- ministers, Ex-Legislators, District presidents and frontal heads. Later, Ch Lal Singh and his supporters were detained at Prade Ground to prevent them from proceeding ahead.
Addressing the gathering at Maharaja Hari Singh Park, Dr Naseer Hussain said that Congress party is carrying on nationwide campaign against removal of pro- labour and pro- poor MGNREGA scheme in the country. He said Modi Government wanted to demolish the pro- poor scheme in the country launched by Congress party.
He lashed out at BJP Govt for ignoring the most popular and legitimate demand of people of J&K for restoration of Statehood and said that entire Congress leadership fully supports the struggle of Jammu and Kashmir for restoration of statehood.
Meanwhile, PCC president Tariq Hameed Karra has asked the J&K Govt to send an all party MLAs team to the Kashmiri migrant camps to see their living conditions and recommend urgent measures to improve their lot.
Karra said this after interaction with the Kashmiri Pandit community, on the eve of holy festival of Mahashivratri, during a visit to the Jagti migrant camp at Nagrota, Jammu, last evening. He said enough politics has taken place on the plight and sufferings of Kashmiri displaced community but its time to rise above vote bank politics and improve their lot who are suffering on multiple fronts.
Karra was accompanied by senior leaders of the party including Raman Bhalla, Yogesh Sawhney, Ravinder Sharma, AR Rather, H L Pandita, Zaffar Slathi, Shubam Pandit and others.
