JAMMU, Feb 2: Congress Party today held an important meeting of Block presidents and other members at Shakti Nagar, Jammu, to chalk out the party’s strategy ahead of the upcoming mass protest scheduled for February 7.
The meeting was chaired by former minister and president, District Congress Committee (DCC) Jammu Urban, Yogesh Sawhney, and focused on intensifying the party’s agitation for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and the protection of the MGNREGA scheme, which has come under severe threat due to the policies of the BJP-led central Government.
It was resolved that a memorandum would be submitted to the President of India as per instructions from party leadership highlighting the growing public resentment and pressing demands of the people, particularly workers, youth and the rural poor.
Apart from Sawhney, the meeting was attended by Thakur Man Mohan Singh, Block president Rakesh Sharma, Darshan Lal Verma, along with Block Congress Committee members from Block No 3 and Block No. 5.
During meeting Sawhney said that the denial of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is a deliberate attempt by the BJP to weaken democratic institutions and silence the voice of the people. He stated that the people of J&K have repeatedly expressed their desire for the restoration of full democratic rights, yet the central government continues to ignore these legitimate aspirations. “Statehood is not a favour; it is the constitutional right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and the Congress Party will continue to fight peacefully but firmly until this right is restored,” he asserted.
He expressed serious concern over the systematic dismantling of the MGNREGA scheme, which he described as a lifeline for rural households and daily wage workers. He said delays in payments, reduced workdays and administrative apathy have pushed thousands of families into distress. “MGNREGA was designed to provide dignity, livelihood and security to the poorest sections. The BJP Government has hollowed out this scheme, leaving workers unpaid and helpless. Our protest on February 7 will strongly highlight this injustice,” he said.
